FIRST has teased the next season (2017-2018) FTC Game, Relic Recovery. Watch the teaser video below:
Red Storm FTC held their own with a 2.5 week old robot against High School teams that had been working ever since kickoff. They finished qualification plays in Rank 55 out of 64 with a record of 1 – 6 – 2. It was at least cool to partner with another Michigan Team in Qualification Round 131.
I’m proud of the team as they kept their spirits up and enjoyed the experience of being at Worlds. I think we’re spoiled now with a 9×9 pit for FTC after typically only having a table at other events.
Many, many thanks to everyone who helped put this new Robot together, especially Pat. Our new “mini-fridge” was the nicest looking robot in either division.
Red Storm was featured on WZZM 13 TV as the team departed for the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
For the first time ever, the Red Storm FTC will be heading to the World Championship which will be taking place at Union Station in St. Louis, MO from April 26 – April 29, 2017. This is such an exciting opportunity for our team! They will be joining 127 other teams from more than 50 countries. The team is very excited for the opportunity to meet and compete with so many different high school and middle school teams in the Velocity Vortex game. The next two weeks will be extremely busy as the team overhauls their robot and begin preparations for the upcoming trip.
In addition to the competition, the team will have the opportunity to get in some other neat activities such as a variety of conferences to attend or “A Night at the Ballpark” where FIRST teams have the chance to participate in a pre-game field parade at Busch Stadium. The team may also join in the FedEx Innovation Challenge which is a social-media-based competition consisting of math and science problems, scavenger hunt activities, trivia and more in which they could get a chance to win up to $5,000 for their team. Or perhaps they may get some time in their busy schedule to do some good old sight seeing! Wish us luck!

Our FTC teams had a good season this year. We started it off by hosting a Rookie Workshop to help other teams build the base push-bot chassis, which would enable them to have a fully driveable base to use in the season. We followed it up by hosting a scrimmage at STEMosphere held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. This helped other local teams by being able to see the competition field and being able to see other teams robots in action.
This past season our three FIRST Tech Challenge Teams did quite well at their two FIRST in Michigan Qualifiers–including several overall team firsts.
At the Big Rapids FTC Qualifier the Red Storm Red – 6482 earned the highest placement in qualification rounds (2nd place). They also had the honor of being the first time as a captain of an alliance. Red Storm Blue – 10031 – was the first time since 2011 that we were on the winning alliance, and qualified them for the Michigan State Competition. The Blue team also earned the PTC Design Award. Not to be left out, Red Storm White – 5292 – won the Controls Award.
At the Kentwood FTC Qualifier the three teams performed quite well. The Red Storm Red – 6482 – team won the Controls Award. Red Storm White – 5292 – was nominated for several awards: Finalist for the Motivate Award, Finalist for the Promote Award and Third place for the Inspire Award. This is the first time that any Red Storm FTC Team or Red Storm FRC Team had placed for the top award (FTC – Inspire, FRC – Chairman’s).
Red Storm Blue – 10031 – went onto the FTC State Competition held at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Michigan. While the team performed well, they didn’t advance to Super Regionals.
We are very proud of our three FTC teams this year.
On Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in the East Kentwood High School West Cafeteria (near our build space) we will be hosting a banquet to celebrate the accomplishments of the three Red Storm FTC Teams (5292, 6482 and 10031)
Team Members, Family and Mentors of all of the teams are invited.
Peppino’s Pasta and Salad will be provided. Please bring a dessert, appetizer and/or pop to share with others.
This weekend our very own Red Storm Blue will be attending the FIRST in Michigan State Championship. This is the first year that 10031 has attended state!
The team has been working hard on polishing their robot driving, strategy and engineering notebook.
Please come and cheer Red Storm on!
This past weekend at the Kentwood FTC Qualifier the Red Storm FTC Teams did quite well.
Red Storm Red won the Control Award!
And Red Storm White was nominated for several awards:
- Finalist for the Motivate Award
- Finalist for the Promote Award
- Third place for the Inspire Award
This is the first time that any Red Storm FTC Team or Red Storm FRC Team had placed for the top award (FTC – Inspire, FRC – Chairman’s). We are very proud of our three FTC teams this year, as each had won various awards. We wish the Red Storm Blue team the best of luck at the State Competition this coming weekend at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Michigan.
The final placement for the various teams in qualification play were:
- Red Storm Blue ranked the highest by coming in 22nd place.
- Red Storm Red ranked at 27th place.
- Red Storm White ranked at 30th place.
On Shelley Irwin’s morning show on WGVU Radio, Red Storm White, Red and Blue team members were on to talk about robotics and the upcoming Kentwood FTC Qualifier held at the East Kentwood Freshman Campus.
