FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was established in 1989, with the competitive season initiating in 1992. FIRST uses robotics as a “varsity sport for the mind” to engage students in science and technology.
In December 2010, FIRST of Michigan asked East Kentwood High School (EKHS) and GE Aviation to establish a FIRST Robotics team. And so, the Red Storm Robotics Team 3875 at EKHS was formed in January 2011, and immediately began the 2011 FIRST Robotics build season. Within 3 months of operation, the team was the highest rookie seed at the West Michigan competition. The team has continued its success in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Kentwood’s middle schools are home to four FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams and two FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams. Since 2012, Red Storm Robotics team sponsors the middle school FTC Qualifier competition for West Michigan in December. Over 20 middle school FTC teams compete.
