FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was established in 1989, with the competitive season initiating in 1992. FIRST uses robotics as a “varsity sport for the mind” to engage students in science and technology.
In December 2010, FIRST of Michigan asked East Kentwood High School (EKHS) and GE Aviation to establish a FIRST Robotics team. And so, the Red Storm Robotics Team 3875 at EKHS was formed in January 2011, and immediately began the 2011 FIRST Robotics build season. With such a late start, Red Storm Robotics did not have time to plan or organize the team, and it showed at times. However, the team will continue to excite students not only about science and technology, but also leadership, cooperation, good character, and gracious professionalism.
Kentwood’s middle schools are home to four FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams, and Crestwood Middle School is also home to two FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams.
West Michigan District Competition at GVSU: Friday-Saturday, March 22-23 at the Fieldhouse at GVSU’s Allendale Campus.
